Every year for Marcus' birthday, at his request, I make him a rhubarb pie. So when the Whisked newsletter arrived in my email box announcing rhubarb and strawberry pies would be available at the farmers market, I thought what a two-fer! I can give Marcus a rhubarb pie and try out Whisked baked treats at the same time (not to mention I could lie in bed and read the New Yorker, instead of making a pie).
Whisked is DC's newest and, as evidenced by their feature in Daily Candy, hottest bakery. The local treat factory was launched about a month ago by local bloggers and bakers, Jenna and Stephanie. Each week they sell sweet and savory baked goods at the 14th and U Street Farmers Market.
I ordered my pie a few days before, paid for it online and then, on Saturday, picked it up from the market. The pie was delicious: the perfect ratio of sweet and tart, with a flaky crust to seal the deal. It was gone in two days.
I also enjoyed hand pies and pound cake.
Check out Jenna and Stephanie at 14th and U Street every week. You can even order ahead online.
