Today I went blueberry picking at Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, MD. In my mind, blueberry picking is a joyous activity that puts you closer to your food source. Not to mention, that when you pick your own (PYOB!) they cost nearly half as much as they would in the store. At Butler’s the blueberries are $2.49 a pound.
Unfortunately, it is the end of the season and there were not as many blueberries on the bushes, leaving my fellow blueberry pickers filled with anxiety that they were not going to “get theirs.” One guy had a little bit of a throw down with the blueberry worker who was providing directions on where we could pick. There were a few rows that were off limits, for whatever reason. When the blueberry worker went to get water or greet new people everyone would sneak over to the off limit rows. I was on my best behavior sticking to the designated bushes. I'm not usually such a rule follower, but it was bordering on blueberry picking anarchy and I felt bad for the blueberry worker. I'm assuming that when he filled out his job application at the orchard that it didn't say blueberry police at the top. I'm not sure if he had a berry good day, but I did.
Here we are pillaging (I mean picking) the last blueberries of the season.
There were a lot of people. It took about 35 minutes to fill my bowl and I walked away with
just over 2 pounds. Plenty of blueberries for everyone!
I’m not sure what I’ll make with my blueberries. Maybe blueberry muffins?
