This past Saturday, after I noticed it was snowing in DC, I got dressed for the 14th and U farmer's market. I thought, ooh, it will be fun to go to the farmer's market in the snow. I guess that makes me a super nerd. Then I remembered that 14th and U was closed for the season. Sigh. I would have to wait until Sunday to visit Dupont, which, by the way, is open year round. So, on Sunday, I trotted off to Dupont long after the snow had melted, and, despite my enthusiasm for visiting the market in the morning, I left feeling down and blue.
The vegetable selection, of course, has decreased significantly. I bought a cabbage, some walnuts, apples, a sweet potato, a regular potato, and some bloody Mary mix from Toigo Orchard. {hat tip: metrocurean's local gift guide}
Here's the thing: My lack of enthusiam wasn't because of the selection--there is still plenty at the market-- it was because I couldn't really think about anything great do with squash and I've already maxed out on kale, mushrooms, and brussels sprouts, my usual go-to winter vegetables. I lacked inspiration.
Then I remembered that I wanted to try Molly Steven's braised cabbage recipe and ALICE WATERS! wasn't it delicious. So maybe a better perspective is that I'm failing the farmer's market; it's not winter failing me. I need to be more creative with what's available because, heck, that's one of the goals of this blog. I'm supposed to be eating more vegetables.
To push myself out of my comfort zone, I need to pick a vegetable and start experimenting --a little bit like what I did with conquering kale. Instead of picking the vegetable on my own, though, I thought I would put it to a vote, mostly because I like collecting data. Super. Nerd.
