This year, instead of making my husband a rhubarb pie for his birthday we made him jelly doughnuts. Rhubarb and strawberry jelly doughnuts. Ok, the truth is, they made the doughnuts. I watched while holding this one. First, they made a quick strawberry and rhubarb freezer jam. Next, they followed this recipe for the doughnut.
Two hours later, we had doughnuts.
These transported me back to my Boston days when every day on the way to high school I used to eat a jelly doughnut from Dunkin Donuts. I really didn't expect these homemade versions to taste like my childhood favorites, but they did. The jelly, piped into each bite of fried dough, was sweet and tart. Each doughnut was dipped into sugar which I found myself licking off my fingers after each bite.
Do you remember this commercial? Time to make the donuts. Maybe this weekend?
